鄂爾多斯青年甘迪與自己的家人生活在地廣人稀的草原上，日子過得寧靜安詳，和諧自足。但他也向往著外面的世界。一日，一位來自北京的名叫秦溯的游客，經(jīng)朋友介紹來到甘迪家。游客寂寞、蕭索的神情引起了甘迪的注意，兩人徹夜長談。接著故事另起一段，講述女主角、勘探隊(duì)員斯男，從內(nèi)蒙古回京之后，先去見了一個男人，兩人在賓館終結(jié)了一段戀情。回到家中，斯男向丈夫秦溯提出離婚。丈夫無意中發(fā)現(xiàn)了妻子的婚外情，接下來的故事出人意料，結(jié)局令人傷感。
